Diabetic ketoacidosis and mortality

Recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is associated with “a substantially elevated risk of death”, says Diabetologia.

Researchers at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh found that 5.2 per cent of those with a single DKA admission died during follow-up, which lasted a median of 4.1 years. Mortality rose to 13.5 per cent in those with two to five DKA admissions over a median of 3.7 years, while 23.4 per cent of those with more than five admissions died over a 2.4 year follow-up.
