module menu icon The role of the pharmacy

There is a strong link between oral health and serious systemic health issues, such as cardiovascular disease. Many customers may not appreciate this link and the importance of keeping their gums healthy and reducing the risk of gum disease.

Gum disease is very common the older we get, but it is not inevitable. However, prevention does require time and effort, including regular visits to the dentist and dental hygienist, twice daily tooth brushing, thorough flossing, use of interdental brushes and a mouthwash for people who want to freshen their breath while helping to maintain good oral health. Knowing when to brush teeth in relation to food and drink consumption is also important, as is diet and beverage intake and reducing the intake of sticky sweets, sugary drinks between meals, and fizzy drinks, which are associated with tooth erosion.

Oral care does take time €“ some customers may not see the need for it €“ but you can motivate them by explaining its importance and how to achieve it. You could consider putting together a basic oral healthcare kit for display to show customers the range of products that could benefit their gums and teeth.

While working through this training material, think about whether the pharmacy team makes the most of the opportunities to promote oral healthcare. Gums and teeth can become very painful, so educating your customers of the value of oral care is very important.
