Step 1: Is there a quality leader?

As we have previously discussed, leadership is critical to the success of a quality system. A leader must be identified and be knowledgeable about quality systems. They must lead from the front, and anticipate and manage resistance to a new or upgraded quality system.

There are a number of quality resources and it is advisable that the leader takes some time to understand these approaches. It is essential that expectations are realistic. A quality system can take many months to develop and embed.

Step 2: Does the practice understand 'why'?

Critical to the success of a quality system, is to clarify why you need to implement it? Consider your practice and look to identify the drivers for change. Implementing a quality system is a change project.

Once you have completed a gap analysis, changes will have to take place to achieve your ultimate quality vision. Appreciating the 'why' enables the leader to sell the need for change to their employees. Do your staff understand why you have quality processes?

Step 3: Is there a quality vision?

Clarify what the practice will look and feel like once the system is fully embedded. This is your quality vision which will provide a direction for all those activities needed to deliver quality and excellence. Have you established a quality vision? Has this been communicated to your staff?
