There is no perfect definition of professionalism. The term means different things to different people, but there are common themes that emerge when people are asked to define what being professional entails. In relation to healthcare, being a  professional can mean:

  • Having a person-centred approach
  • Having expert knowledge and skills and keeping these up to date
  • Abiding by professional standards
  • Being able to practise with a significant level of autonomy
  • Knowing the limits of your own competence
  • Being part of a wider network of people who are trusted to undertake a particular role
  • Being regulated by a recognised, external body
  • Doing the right thing and being a role model
  • Being a member of your professional leadership body
  • Doing the right thing and being a role model
  • Being a member of your professional leadership body.

The NHS Constitution sets out the principles and values of the NHS in England. Principle 3 states that ‘the NHS aspires to the highest standards of excellence and professionalism’.
