There are instances when people do not act professionally and this can be for a number of reasons. There are several factors that may affect professionalism, from emotional triggers and past experience to personality, attitude and personal beliefs. These include:

1. Awareness, understanding and acceptance of professional standards and expectations

If a professional is not aware of or does not understand what is expected of them in terms of professional conduct, then they are less likely to conform. The same is true if they do not accept that the standards apply to them or have become complacent about the standards.

In order to enter and remain on the GPhC register as a pharmacy technician there is a requirement to make a declaration that you will adhere to the GPhC standards. It is therefore essential that every pharmacy technician knows and follows the GPhC’s standards for pharmacy professionals.

2. Personal circumstances and significant life events

People experiencing difficulties in their personal or home life can find it hard not to let it affect their performance at work. Personal difficulties may relate to health, family, relationships, finance, etc.

It is important for individuals to seek help and guidance if they, or someone they work with, are experiencing issues that impact on work life, particularly if there is a chance that fitness to practise may be impaired. Information about support for pharmacy technicians can be found in CPPE and Pharmacist Support’s joint pharmacy technicians factsheet.
