Healthcare support workers are involved in a range of medicines-related tasks, including collecting prescriptions and purchasing OTC medicines. They are usually trained to administer a small range of medicines. In the community, they may visit a pharmacy for information about medicines, dose timings and multi-compartment compliance aids.

Allied HCPs are based in community health centres, clinics or GP surgeries, but also visit housebound people. They often receive referrals from GPs, community matrons and other HCPs, and include:

Occupational therapists: assess and treat people with disabilities to help promote independence. They may be interested in the devices available to support older people with medicine taking. Pharmacists will find occupational therapists an important link to optimising medicines use.

Physiotherapists: assess physical ability, diagnose and carry out interventions to help maximise functional ability and improve posture. They prescribe exercises and carry out manipulation or mobilisation techniques to help older people who have suffered a stroke, fall, or have Parkinson's disease or musculoskeletal conditions. They often ask pharmacists about pain management or cardiovascular medicines, as well as the effects of medicines on posture, falls, postural hypotension and exercise.

Podiatrists and chiropodists: assess, diagnose and treat foot and lower limb problems. Podiatrists can administer medicines under patient group directions, and some are non-medical prescribers
Speech and language therapists: assess and treat older people who have difficulty communicating, eating, drinking or swallowing. They often require information on the effects of medicines on these functions, as well as 'easy to swallow' formulations.

Dietitians: assess nutritional needs, develop plans and offer support on how to maintain a healthy weight through diet and supplemental feeds.
