The stigma of mental health causes people with schizophrenia to be reluctant to seek help and support. This can lead to a difficult and slow recovery, as well as a negative impact on physical health. As healthcare professionals, it is not prejudice that prevents us from offering support to people with mental health problems, it is more often fear of not knowing what to say or how it should be said. The national 'Time to Change' campaign provides resources for people with mental illness and the public to improve communication about mental health and reduce the barriers to accessing support. The key messages from this campaign can be adapted to the community pharmacy setting:

  • Talk, but listen too €“ simply being there will mean a lot
  • Don't just talk about mental health €“ chat about everyday things as well l Remind them you care €“ small things can make a big difference
  • Be patient €“ ups and downs can happen.

Improving your confidence in talking to people with mental health problems can improve the impact of conversations about medicines and promote adherence.
