There are several treatment options available, including eye drops, sprays and ointments. Aqueous tear products, such as those containing hypromellose (e.g. Tears Naturale), are the most commonly used products, but they need to be used frequently (ideally at 30- minute intervals initially until symptoms improve, then less often). More viscous products (e.g. Geltears, Systane) need less frequent application, but may be less well tolerated because of stinging or blurring.
Sodium chloride is shortacting and suitable as €comfort drops€. If a product causes irritation or if soft contact lenses are worn, a preservative-free product may be more suitable.
There is no clear evidence that any one product is better than another. The severity of the condition and the person's preference should guide choice.
