When thinking of setting up an immunisation service in a community pharmacy, teams must ensure that it will be set up in a clean and cleanable area that is suitable for the purpose. There will need to be running water available, if possible, and antiseptic hand gel if not, washable floors, a vaccine fridge and vaccine preparation area close by. The set up of the area should offer easy access for patients and their parents or carers and allow for the immunisation procedure to take place easily and in relative comfort. The appropriate disposal of vaccine waste should also be considered.
Once these issues have been thought through and the necessary measures put in place, there will also be legal, clinical governance, safety and communication issues to consider.
