Managing stress during a pandemic

Increased workload and worries about Covid-19 are putting extra pressure on pharmacy teams: 81 per cent of pharmacists are experiencing high stress levels because of workplace issues and three-quarters are dealing with burnout. This means finding strategies to combat stress is more important than ever.

Here are some tips to help you manage during this difficult time:

1. Make a to-do list

When you know there is going to be a particularly busy period, it can help to plan out your day in advance. Break up large tasks into smaller, more manageable tasks and tackle them one at a time.

2. Reframe negativity

A helpful way to do this is through journaling. Try writing down a list of worries and then challenge each one in turn. Think about what you would say to a friend if they came to you with a similar worry.

3. Stay connected

Keep in touch with family and friends through phone calls and video chats. If you share a household with others, try to spend quality time together. If you are struggling with stress, it can help to talk through your feelings with a trusted friend or contact a helpline.

4. Keep moving

Movement of any sort helps to relieve stress and contributes to positive mental health. Try a home workout or get outside in the fresh air for a walk. Remember to stay 2 metres away from others when outside.

5. Practise gratitude

Regularly taking a moment to appreciate the good things in life can instantly change your mood. Try making a list of five things you feel grateful for, whether it’s supportive colleagues, having a roof over your head or your morning cup of coffee.
