Knights Pharmacy is using an eight-figure loan from HSBC to expand its store footprint across South Wales, the chain has said.
The new pharmacies are in “key community locations” in the Rhondda, Cynon Valley and other parts of the region, according to a statement this morning (July 3) that touted “upgraded digital systems” and a “broader range of clinical services” for the recently acquired stores.
All 240 members of staff at the pharmacies are to be kept on to ensure “continuity of care and local knowledge,” said Knights.
The new acquisitions take the chain’s footprint to “over 70” with a 35 per cent rise in turnover predicted over the next 12 months.
The company’s estate appears to have fluctuated significantly in recent years, with previous reports suggesting it owned 70 pharmacies in September 2021, 98 in May 2022 and 49 in June 2024.
The family-owned business featured on the Financial Times’ list of the 1,000 fastest growing companies in Europe this year in terms of turnover, with managing director Anand Sodha commenting at the time on the company’s strategy of growing “carefully in a changing industry landscape”.
Mr Sodha said today that he was “incredibly pleased” by the company’s expansion in Wales.
He commented: “These are well respected community pharmacies with strong local roots, and this expansion reflects the trust we have in our teams across Wales, both existing and new.
“Most importantly, it allows us to serve even more patients in the Valleys with the care and consistency they deserve.”
HSBC relationship director Partho Bose said: “We've worked closely with the team at Knights Pharmacy for several years, supporting growth across England and Wales.
“The company’s drive and community-centred approach aligns with our desire to back ambitious businesses.”
