A pharmacist who administered an injection of homeopathic vitamin B12 which was sourced from the internet to a colleague despite being unsure where it came from has been warned by the General Pharmaceutical Council.
The regulator’s investigating committee heard Bindy Rowcroft delivered the injection while working for The Medical Group some time between June and November 2024.
She received the same injection from the colleague in return even though she “was unsure as to the injected substance’s nature or provenance”.
The committee also heard Mrs Rowcroft failed to ensure appropriate checks were made regarding medical history, including potential allergies or contraindications, and no records of the injections were made.
“Neither the registrant or (the) colleague were a registered patient at the practice,” the committee noted in its report on the hearing.
It ruled Mrs Rowcroft breached six standards (working in partnership, effective communication, professional judgement, professional behaviour, speaking up about concerns and leadership).
“The registrant is warned that she should only ever administer medication when she has fully satisfied herself that it is necessary, appropriate and safe to do so," it said. "She should also ensure she is aware of the nature and provenance of any such medication administered.”
