Benign prostatic hyperplasia

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is very common in older men. For some it causes only mild symptoms, while others may need medication or procedures.

Lifestyle measures to help control mild symptoms include reducing caffeine and alcohol; avoiding decongestants and antihistamines if symptoms worsen; encouraging healthy weight; and regular bowel habits.

Pharmacy technicians can also suggest bladder training and pelvic floor exercises. See The British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) pelvic floor exercises for men information leaflet: bit.ly/41VkIa2.

Pharmacy technicians may counsel patients on medicines such as:

  • Alpha-blockers (e.g. tamsulosin) – relax prostate muscles, quick relief of symptoms
  • 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (e.g. fi nasteride) – shrink prostate over time
  • PDE-5 inhibitors (e.g. tadalafil) – for men with urinary and erectile problems. It’s important to remind patients to report blood in urine, pain or worsening symptoms. Pharmacy technicians can also provide reassurance that there are effective treatments available.
