Understanding testosterone

Testosterone levels naturally decline with age, but some men develop low testosterone (hypogonadism), which causes symptoms like:

  • Low energy and fatigue
  • Reduced sex drive or erectile problems
  • Low mood
  • Increased body fat and reduced muscle mass.

Treatment with testosterone replacement therapy may be prescribed, but it requires close monitoring because it can affect blood thickness, heart health and the prostate. Patients should be reminded about regular blood tests and implementing lifestyle changes encouraged like weight loss, exercise and better sleep. Refer any questions about therapy to the pharmacist or GP.
