How should emollients be used?

Emollients form the basis of dry skin management, including eczema. They should be applied generously and regularly to maintain the skin.

As a guide:

  • Use 250-500g per week for children10
  • Use 500g plus per week for adults10
  • Apply gently in the direction of the hair growth
  • Apply after bathing while water is still trapped in the skin, for extra hydration11

pH balance

  • Some emollients have the ability to regulate the skin pH, bringing it back to an ideal acidic level of 5.0 to 5.5
  • REMEMBER: the skin microbiome is at its optimal balance when the pH is 5.5
