Identifying compromised skin

As part of the pharmacy team, you will often be the first port of call for customers' skin queries. Your role may involve identifying the type of skin in order to then make your recommendation on how to best manage their condition.

Healthy, hydrated skin has a balanced microbiome and preserved skin barrier. The skin looks smooth, is soft to touch and has no cracks.

Dry skin often has a more alkaline pH which leads to an unbalanced microbiome, resulting in an altered and compromised skin barrier. Skin can look dull, flaky, rough, scaly, and can be itchy.

If dry skin persists, the barrier becomes more compromised and cracks. This allows bacteria and allergens to permeate the skin, leading to inflammation on the skin surface.

Skin with eczema becomes dry and itchy. The skin can be cracked, red and sore. It can affect any part of the body, but eczema is often found on the hands, backs of knees and insides of the elbows.9
