Self-care advice for customers

DO

  • Keep eyes clean, use warm compresses and massage
  • Take regular breaks to rest the eyes when using a computer screen
  • Lower computer screens to below eye level and increase blink frequency when using computers and reading
  • Use a humidifier to stop the air getting dry
  • Get plenty of sleep to rest the eyes
  • Limit contact lens wear to shorter periods and remove lenses when dry eye symptoms appear

DON'T

  • Smoke or drink too much alcohol
  • Spend too long in smoky, dry or dusty places
  • Spend too long in air conditioned or heated rooms
  • Stop taking a prescribed medicine without getting medical advice first, even if they think it is causing their symptoms
Customers should be advised to see their optometrist or GP if:
  • They still have dry eyes after trying home treatments for a few weeks
  • There is any change in the shape of their eyelids
Customers should ask for an urgent appointment if:
  • They have any changes to their vision, such as loss of vision
