Monitoring and measuring employee performance is critical to any business. Effective pharmacy managers provide frequent guidance and coaching as well as feedback to their employees throughout the year about job duties and responsibilities, performance goals and expectations. This enables the manager to assess and monitor performance closely and for the employee to measure themselves against targets that have been set them.

Handling employee performance effectively is particularly pertinent in smaller team settings such as the pharmacy, where tensions can easily impact on business performance and customer service. Poor performance can lead to disrupted workflows, tension, increased stress and lost business. It is essential that a manager ensures that they follow a structured performance system.

Encouraging better and more direct workplace communication and attempting to resolve any problems between an employee and employer at an early stage, reduces the chance of problems going to an employment tribunal, as well as saving everyone time and money. The organisation Acas is a good source of advice about fair and reasonable ways of tackling problems at work.
