The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging the public to remain vigilant against tick bites this summer, following the confirmation of 1,581 cases of Lyme disease in 2024. Although this represents a 5.2 per cent decrease from 2023, officials warn that the true number of infections is likely higher.
Lyme disease, a bacterial infection transmitted by infected ticks, can cause a spreading bullseye-shaped rash, fever, fatigue, nerve pain, and facial drooping. Symptoms typically appear 3-30 days after a bite. While not all ticks carry the infection, early detection and antibiotic treatment are essential.
UKHSA advises people spending time outdoors – especially in the South West, South East and London regions – to wear protective clothing, use insect repellent, and check themselves and pets for ticks.
Consultant microbiologist Dr Christina Petridou emphasized the importance of safe tick removal and prompt GP contact if symptoms appear.
