For this session, use our feature on sport and fitness, as well as other sources of information, to strengthen your knowledge and give you more insight and information to pass on to your customers. Take the time to look at magazines and newspapers to see how they present fitness and physical activity. Even if you are not usually interested in sport, take a look at the sports pages in newspapers. How do you react to those pages? Would they encourage you to take up sport even though that's not their aim?

In order to make this training useful and relevant to your work, consider the following:

  • What are the physical activity guidelines for adults in the UK? How can these guidelines be achieved on a daily/weekly basis? What counts as moderate and intensive activity?
  • What are the benefits of physical activity? Use your findings to help your customers understand why they should consider aiming for the NHS guidelines
  • How can you help your customers get active? What are the opportunities in your area?
Put together a list of places such as swimming pools, gyms, exercise classes, footpaths, mountain bike trails and cycling paths and keep this information to hand in the pharmacy
  • Identify three health-related physical activity apps suitable for smartphones or tablets. Discuss your findings within the team and consider their potential value to customers
  • Have a look at this physical activity questionnaire. Could you adapt this to help customers identify how they could improve their physical activity?
  • How can the pharmacy team be more physically active during the working day?
