Lisa, aged 45, comes to the pharmacy to ask for a product to ease her diarrhoea. She tells you that she has suffered from diarrhoea before and has been to see her GP. The GP told her it might be IBS, but Lisa thinks it may be down to wheat intolerance instead. She explains that she had been avoiding bread in an attempt to lose weight, but last night she had a pizza and her diarrhoea started about half an hour afterwards. Discuss in your team:

  • What further questions you would ask Lisa?
  • How many customers do you speak to who have concerns about eating bread?
  • What evidence is there that avoiding bread might help someone to lose weight?
  • What evidence is there that cutting out wheat can lead to intolerance?
  • What is the difference between wheat intolerance and coeliac disease?
  • If Lisa had coeliac disease, how would it be diagnosed?
  • Which types of processed gluten-free foods are available on prescription and which are not?
