For this session, use our preceding article on child health, as well as other sources of information to strengthen your knowledge of children's health issues. This will give you more insight and information to pass on to your customers. You can use information sources you may have in the pharmacy, such as other articles, OTC medicines guides and manufacturer literature.

You will find plenty of information about child health issues in our article. Do you come across child health issues in the pharmacy that are not mentioned in the article? What are they? Do you feel confident enough to deal with them and do you know when to refer to the pharmacist or signpost a parent for further help?

In order to make the training and discussion useful and relevant to your work:

  • What are the nutritional guidelines outlined in the Eatwell Guide? Are these suitable for children as well as adults?
  • How much sleep do children and teenagers need?
  • Other than those outlined for sepsis, what warning signs could indicate serious illness in a child and require referral to the pharmacist?
  • Within your team, share your own childhood experiences or those of your children that could help the team's interactions with families
  • Do you work with young people €“ for example, in a local youth group or school? Do you have any insight to share that could help the team communicate with families?
