People considered to be in the increasing risk or higher risk groups for alcohol consumption, as discussed in part one of this series, are at an increased risk of physical health problems such as cancer and heart disease. See Table 1, below, for more details.
Often, people are treated for problems that have been exacerbated by alcohol, such as hypertension, depression or anxiety, without ever having the contributing factor of alcohol addressed. Offering advice to someone whose drinking is identified as a risk to their health may help them avoid future problems.
