In the absence of definitive evidence regarding which patients are most likely to benefit from a holistic review of their medicines, a patientcentred approach is suggested.
There can be a tendency when identifying patients for a medicines use review (MUR) to focus on medicines rather than patients' needs and preferences. Patient-centred care is about ensuring the care provided for a patient takes into account their knowledge, beliefs, culture and values. Patients should be treated as equal partners in the decision making process, and any decisions regarding the review of treatment should include the patient and their carer at all stages.
The key is that the decisions should be informed decisions and as such patients should be given all the information they need in order to engage in the decision properly.
