module menu icon The golden rules of preparation

  1. Worry less about what you want to say, concentrate instead on what you want your presentation to achieve. Ask yourself, ‘What do I want the audience to be thinking and feeling when I come to the end of my presentation?’. Write down a clear objective for your audience before you start
  2. Find out as much as you can about your audience and ensure that your content is very, very relevant to them and their needs
  3. Use language and a tone of voice that your audience will understand and identify with and incorporate this into your own natural style of speaking
  4. By all means use a bit of jargon, as long as you are sure that your audience will understand them. Never use phrases that others may not know; even where there are other health professionals in your audience, pharmacy specific words or acronyms may be new to them
  5. Cut the clutter. Success in getting your message across will be almost entirely dependent on what your audience remembers and does as a result of what you say. It's a good rule of thumb to have no more than five key points in your presentation
  6. Have a clear structure. Make sure there's a clear and impactful beginning, a main body containing your key points and a concise summary to end with.
