NICE’s newly published Quality Standard on the menopause highlighted several areas that community pharmacy can support, particularly:

  • The fact that diagnostic tests are not required for women aged over 45 years with menopausal symptoms
  • The significance of providing information on menopausal symptoms to women who undergo surgical or medical treatment that may induce the condition
  • The need to offer hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or a combined oral contraceptive to women with premature ovarian insufficiency as failure to do so can reduce quality of life and increase the risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease
  • The importance of reviewing women three months after starting any treatment and then at least annually thereafter.
