Teesside University to offer placements in Malaysia in newly launched MPharm

Teesside University has announced the launch of a new MPharm degree this September that will offer overseas clinical placements to help undergraduates ‘expand their horizons’.

Pharmacy students at the university will be offered the chance to carry out some of their clinical training in Malaysia as part of a reciprocal arrangement with IMU University in Kuala Lumpur.

The placements build on an existing collaboration involving the two universities’ chiropractic programmes, as well as a student exchange earlier this year that saw six pharmacy students travel from Malaysia to complete elective training in Middlesbrough.

Samantha Weston, director of pharmacy at the university, said: “International clinical pharmacy placements offer students a transformative opportunity to expand their horizons, both professionally and personally.

“Immersed in different healthcare systems, students develop enhanced clinical expertise and a global perspective on patient care.

“The partnerships built through these exchanges also create a powerful foundation or future global health initiatives and lifelong professional relationships.”

The four-year MPharm programme at Teesside University joins courses at 30 other accredited schools of pharmacy in the UK.

In August last year, the Pharmacy Schools Council raised concerns about what it called the “uncontrolled” increase in the number of university pharmacy departments amid chronic staff shortages.

The PhSC said these shortages are driven by resource constraints such as the challenge universities face in offering experienced pharmacy practitioners a salary equal to what they would earn in the “external workplace”.
