Take the following steps:

Research

  • What are the local priorities for health and public health?
  • Is there a local campaign plan €“ NHS, public health or CCG?
  • Look for upcoming national awareness days, weeks or months
  • Know who and where you can signpost customers to if they need more support than you can offer.

Involve the team

Ask your health champion to lead the work and engage and involve the team in something they are passionate about.

Make it happen

Ensure you have all you need to run a great campaign:

  • Focus on a specific topic rather than a broad one, eg sugar not obesity; dementia not mental health
  • Source leaflets and posters from the local health promotion unit or charities
  • Plan the display in your health promotion zone and window
  • Develop some of your own materials, such as key words or facts, to add to the display
  • Borrow or buy some props that will create interest, such as bags of salt and foods with high but hidden salt content, tar jars for smoking, even blobs of fat (adipose tissue), Eatwell plates and alcohol wheels
  • Create some theatre by wearing T-shirts or sashes with key messages or even dress up as fruit, vegetables or a cigarette
  • Add an activity, such as blood pressure monitoring, or interactive tools, such as scratch cards
  • Think about how you can reach out to your community, where and how you could promote the messages within your campaign (eg schools, colleges, Sure Start Children's Centres, places of worship, sports facilities and fairs).

Educate

Make sure everyone in your team knows about the issue, the questions to ask people, advice to give and actions to take.

Measure and record

Record as much of what you do as possible, then shout about your successes.
