Professional development frameworks exist to set out the standards required in particular areas of expertise. They provide different stages of development for individuals to map themselves against in order to demonstrate competence and identify areas in which
to improve their practice.

Many professional frameworks in pharmacy, such as those from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS), were designed for pharmacists to deliver services, but some are more generic and can also be used by pharmacy technicians. In terms of professionalism, the frameworks to look at are:

  • APTUK’s Foundation Pharmacy Framework (FPF)
  • The RPS’ Leadership Development Framework (LDF)
  • The RPS’ Advanced Pharmacy Framework (APF).
  • The APTUK FPF was designed for early-career pharmacy technicians to establish their competence in four general areas of practice, regardless of their sector. Cluster 2 covers professional practice and enables pharmacy technicians to identify areas for self-improvement in relation to professionalism and professional decision-making.

The RPS LDF is based on the NHS Leadership Academy’s Healthcare Leadership Model, so it translates across sectors and professions. The questions asked require pharmacy technicians to reflect on their skills, behaviours and attitudes so that they can measure their current leadership attributes and form development goals and an action plan.

The RPS APF is aimed at specialists and senior level practitioners across all sectors. It is intended for use once the FPF has been completed. For pharmacy technicians who work at a more strategic level, or those aspiring to advance their career, the APF is a useful mapping tool.
