Scenario

During an annual appraisal, a pharmacist manager presented their key objectives for next year. She used statements such as 'I intend to build an effective pharmacy team to deliver excellent healthcare services' and 'I will improve employee effectiveness via better communication'.

The manager quizes the pharmacist on how this will be done. The owner had doubts in his mind that these things will actually be achieved. While the manager was probably perfectly capable of carrying out what was intended, the plan seemed rather incomplete.

What do the statements made by the manager actually mean? They are too vague; are simply statements of intent and will just remain so. You need to be specific about what you are going to do and what you need in order to achieve that positive outcome. This will include finance, people, skills, premises, knowledge etc. Set a time frame for each action and this will make you move towards the positive goal.
