ANTACIDS6

Antacids work by neutralising the acid in the stomach. They work quickly to relieve symptoms and last for a few hours. They are best taken with or soon after meals and before going to bed. Examples include sodium bicarbonate and calcium carbonate.

ALGINATES1

Alginates form a thick protective layer on top of the stomach contents that helps to reduce reflux symptoms. They are usually taken after meals and before bed. An example is sodium alginate.

ACID SUPPRESSING MEDICINES1

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) reduce the amount of acid produced by the cells in the stomach. They should be taken for the shortest time at the lowest dose. They are best taken 30 minutes before breakfast or dinner. Examples include omeprazole and esomeprazole.

BISMUTH SUBSALICYLATE7

Bismuth subsalicylate works by forming a protective coating in the stomach, the lower part of the food pipe and gut. It works within 30 to 60 minutes and can be taken with or without food. Bismuth subsalicylate is not suitable for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and should not be used in patients under 16 years of age.

It’s important that you consider the best option for your customers who require fast-acting, long-lasting relief from their reflux symptoms.
